Animations

For some reason my links to the animations did not come out properly in my submission post.
This was bought to my attention and I have linked them here for consideration if possible.

LINK TO MODEL

I did not realise that we had to link to the model:

Experiment Submission 1

 Abstract Sectional Diagram;

For Stelarc's "Ear on Arm" sculpture the keyword 'mutating' was chosen. From Louise Bourgeois' "The Nest", the keyword 'repeating' was chosen. In the top space I attempted to show the characteristics of mutation and it's randomness by creating a series of jutting and almost random structures. In the bottom space i reflected upon the idea of repeating by repeating the very cyclic shapes that i constructed.

Drafting Process;

 My first start at the modeling process. This draft appropiates some of the forms from the sectional diagram and extrudes them into 3D space.
This draft is very much refined and looks much closer to the final product. However there is still much work to be done on the interior spaces and forms.

Staircases;

This first staircase is actually a series of pillars that rise upwards in succession to form a staircase. They are freestanding and not necessarily arranged in a linear formation, but rather are skewed back and forth. This aims to slow down the ascent up the stairs and build up a sense of grandeur and the unusual, both of which are reflected in Stelarc's sculpture. This is further emphasised by their, curvacious arrangement around the building.

This staircase is much more similar to a standard staircase. However there are a few details that add emphasis. The curved juncture between the tread and riser reflect the cyclic structure used in the lower section of the building. They are also freestanding, almost floating in the air. This property is also illustrated in the railing which reflects upon the artist's work; the legs of the spider.

Textures;

WEBBED -  I used this texture on the floor space in the gallery housing "The Nest". I feel it very well reflects the theme of the artwork.
 LUMINOUS - This texture was applied to the enclosure that creates the upper workshop. I felt that they worked well to highlight the space and give it a sense of importance and grandeur.
 EARTHY - I applied this texture to the tunnel leading down to the lower workshop. I feel it created a very dark and tunnel-like feeling to the structure, which helped create the atmosphere I was aiming for.

ORGANIC - I applied this texture to the pillar-steps and the hanging structures. I did this to reflect my inspiration for these ideas (natural rock formations, such a carved stairs and stalactites) which had a very firm base in the natural environment.

Images from developed model;
This image depicts the building from the front exterior as would be seen by a person approaching it.

This image depicts the gallery space for "The Nest", with the 'webbed' texture beneath it.
This image depicts the gallery space for Stelarc's "Ear on Arm" sculpture as can be seen from near the entrance. The positioning of the "Ear on Arm" sculpture next to the water was also deliberate; as a homage to the sculpture's original placement (the beach).

Animations;

Stairs!

I realised that for some reason i had neglected to upload my stair sections earlier on and so here they are;

The scans are organised so that the section and it's flipped version are beside one another. Also the label denotes the setup of the left-side scan with the right side scan being the reverse of the label.
